Public Architecture

Between our home and office we pass by and through architectures that shape our lives, often called the third place. Public spaces – libraries, recreation centers, museums, municipal buildings, and civic monuments – speak to who we are. Thoughtful planning and design practices are part of how we see ourselves.

Public Architecture is a substantial portion of our work and we have completed many large-scale projects for various governmental organizations. It is our privilege to engage with projects that have lasting usefulness and create a sense of shared memory and experience.

Every public project has its unique context: site, climate, culture, and community. Our designs respond to that context by creating buildings and spaces that celebrate our humanity.

Our Public Architecture practice also finds its way into local neighborhoods, far from the corridors of power. In a time when the very concept of “the common good” is called into question, we can assert that shared space is a critical community asset. Its existence teaches us that goodwill for our neighbor is practical common sense, and not a lofty abstraction to sacrifice at the altar of growth.

Community projects challenge us to bring our best ideas to the table. We use solutions that reduce a building’s carbon footprint and maximize its usefulness. Through imaginative siting decisions and innovative design approaches, we draw people in and endeavor to knit communities together. We hope for people develop a relationship with place, and with each other.
