The 20,000 SF, $11 Million facility replaced the existing Engine Co. 22 building which was over 100 years old and in need of major building and systems upgrades. Located on a new site, across from the Walter Reed Medical Center campus, the building is 2-levels with 4 apparatus bays and underground parking that responds to the site constraints. The building placement and orientation was based on street access for the Apparatus as well as public access to the building. Among the sustainable strategies used is the vegetated roof, which, in addition to contributing to stormwater management, enhances the building’s thermal envelope thereby reducing demand on the mechanical system.
