Patrick Henry was an 86,437 SF Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school on a 13 acre site with 9,400 SF shared with a community Recreation Center. For Alexandria City Public Schools, Sorg provided a feasibility study that evaluated transforming the school into a 130,000 sf state of the art, green building for grades Pre-K through 8th grade while maintaining the community recreation component.
Sorg provided the client with three different schemes. The first option places the school within the footprint of the existing building with the large multipurpose field on the western edge of the site providing a large open space near these neighbors. Other schemes included siting the building at the corner of N Latham St. and Taney Ave., anchoring the corner and surrounding the building by open green space, creating a buffer between the neighbors on N Latham St. And an option for a renovation and addition to the existing school building.
