The District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department’s Institute of Police Science is located on a 20 acre campus in Southwest Washington, DC. The new Training Academy is a part of a complex of Police Department buildings that also includes an existing academic building, a K-9 training facility and a small arms firing range. The 12,000 SF multi-purpose Police Training Academy provides state-of-the-art telecommunications, audio-visual and instructional systems both in individual classrooms and in the 180 seat auditorium. Classrooms consist of a combination of fixed, tiered seating and movable seating and the facility also includes a cafeteria, lounge, administrative offices and support facilities.
The building components are connected with an entrance, service and stair core that links the two volumes. On the exterior, a brown clay brick laid in an “American Bond” was selected. This “school-house” brick visually connects the existing buildings with the new facility across the outdoor courtyard. Commercial store-front glazing and entry panels were used in order to keep costs low and wide roof overhangs were used to shade the glass areas on the south facing facades, which combine with high efficiency HVAC systems to create a highly sustainable building.
