The historic Bruce Monroe Elementary School at Park View was constructed in 1916, and two additional academic wings were added in 1931. Located in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood in Washington, DC, with a growing elementary-school-aged population, the 80,000 SF building had significantly deteriorated. The design for the modernization is an opportunity to restore the historic 1931 building to its original glory while providing a state-of-the-art environment for its 1,000 students and the local community. At the center of the re-imagined school, the main auditorium was restored and brought back to life as the focal point for the school community. The restored school also includes upgraded classrooms, a new kitchen, a state-of-the-art media center, and a new welcome center.
